Many Melbourne homeowners assume that because their switchboard has switches that trip, they're protected from electric shock. Often they're not. Circuit breakers and safety switches look similar and sit side by side in your switchboard, but they do completely different jobs — and only one of them protects people.
What a Circuit Breaker Does
A circuit breaker protects your wiring and appliances. It monitors the current flowing through a circuit and switches off automatically when the circuit is overloaded or a short circuit occurs. This prevents cables from overheating and causing fires. What it does not do is protect a person receiving an electric shock — the current involved in a fatal shock is far too small to trip a standard circuit breaker.
What a Safety Switch (RCD) Does
A safety switch — technically a Residual Current Device (RCD) — protects people. It constantly compares the current flowing into a circuit with the current flowing back out. If there's an imbalance of as little as 30 milliamps (for example, current flowing through a person to earth), it cuts the power in under 300 milliseconds — fast enough to prevent a fatal shock.
The Key Difference at a Glance
- Circuit breaker — protects wiring from overload and short circuits; prevents electrical fires
- Safety switch (RCD) — protects people from electric shock; trips on earth leakage in milliseconds
- RCBO — a combined device that does both jobs in a single unit, common in modern switchboards
How to Tell What You Have
Open your switchboard and look for a device with a **T or "Test" button** — that's a safety switch. Standard circuit breakers have no test button. If nothing in your board has a test button, you have no shock protection and should talk to an electrician promptly.
What Victorian Law Requires
Safety switches are mandatory on power and lighting circuits in Victorian rental properties, and required on new circuits in all homes. If your rental property's switchboard lacks RCD protection, it will fail its electrical safety check and must be upgraded to remain compliant.
Test Your Safety Switches Every 3 Months
Press the test button — the switch should trip instantly and cut power to its circuits. Reset it and you're done. If it doesn't trip, or won't reset, stop using the affected circuits and call an electrician. We test every safety switch as part of our rental safety checks and general inspections.
